Pavement Design
For advice on CBRs, get in touch with BRD
BRD investigation comments on appropriate design California Bearing Ratio (CBR) for design of pavement foundations based on laboratory testing or insitu testing as appropriate. In more difficult ground conditions, BRD can advise on ground improvement by dynamic compaction, pavement foundation reinforced with geo-grids or other techniques to ensure a cost effective road design.
The condition of existing pavements can be assessed by BRD by rotary coring through existing surfacing to obtain a sample for inspection of the constructed layers. Through the hole formed the pavement foundations can then be assessed with use of a TRL dynamic cone penetrometer.
BRD actively promote the use of high quality recycled aggregates and indeed were involved in some of the first projects where crushed concrete meeting Type 1 specification requirements were employed in adopted estate roads.
Linking in with the use of soakaways and associated testing, BRD can also advise on the suitability of the ground for a permeable pavement design.
